Dear Diary, I Don’t Want to Be a Strong Woman Today
I cried three times this week.
And no, it wasn’t because someone physically hurt me. Although, if we are being honest, someone did. Her name is Adulthood, and she’s been whooping my behind non-stop.
Let’s talk about it. Have you seen the price of plantain lately? I went to the market with ₦10,000, thinking I would do major damage, only to return home with vibes and one wrap of ponmo. And don’t even get me started on eggs. ₦6,000 for a crate? Is it gold that the chickens are laying?
This week, I made a pot of soup for ₦20,000… and it lasted all of two days. Two! If you see me eating noodles again this week, please mind your business. Survival mode has been activated.
But beyond the rants and inflation-induced tears, I know I’m not alone. So I’m checking in: how are you really doing in this economy? How are you staying afloat mentally, emotionally, and financially? What’s your own adulthood story this week?
Sexual Health & Unlearning Shame
Let’s be real, growing up in communities steeped in purity culture has left a lot of us confused, ashamed, and disconnected from our own bodies. You hear things like “sex makes you dirty,” “no one will marry you if you’re not a virgin,” or “your worth is in your virginity.” So when you do engage in sex, even with consent, love, or safety, why does it feel like guilt is the loudest voice in the room?
For some of us, it’s not even about doing it. It’s the fear, the anxiety, the shame that’s been deeply rooted in our psyche. You could believe in waiting till marriage and still feel dirty for being curious, for having desire, or for even talking about sex.
It’s wild how purity culture teaches us to associate our value with what we do, or don’t do, with our bodies. But here’s the thing: sexual health is not just about not having sex. It’s about understanding your body, knowing your rights, embracing boundaries, and making informed, shame-free choices that align with your values.
So, let’s open up the conversation: Have you ever felt guilty or “unclean” after sex or even after thinking about it? Are you unlearning messages that made you feel like your body wasn’t yours?
You’re not alone. Healing from purity culture is a journey, and we are here to walk it with you without judgment, just truth and sisterhood.

Rape, Cover-Ups and the Fight for Justice in African Communities by Ewaoluwa Adekanye

From schools to homes, religious organizations, to police stations, survivors are met not with support, but with doubt, blame, or even active suppression.
